On February 18, 2023 Ship and Ocean Engineering Wave Load Application Technology Seminar and COMPASS-WALCS Software Users' Annual Conference was held in Harbin Engineering University. The conference was jointly held by Harbin Engineering University, China Classification Society, and the Joint Laboratory for International Cooperation in Ship and Ocean Engineering Technology. Experts and enterprise representatives from famous universities such as Lisbon University in Portugal, South China University of Technology, Dalian University of Technology, Naval University of Engineering, China Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Corporation, and Shosha Group participated in the conference. Our company, as a research and development unit of Structural health monitoring sensors for ships, was invited to attend the conference.

The conference was chaired by Professor Han Duanfeng, Vice President of Harbin Engineering University, and engaged in extensive and in-depth exchanges on topics such as the development of ship and ocean engineering wave load technology and COMPASS-WALCS wave load application technology, jointly exploring the opportunities and challenges faced by the global ocean industry development.
During the meeting, our engineer Fang Hao and Professor Zhou Xueqian from Harbin Engineering University communicated and exchanged ideas on the current development status and related technical issues faced by the ship structure safety monitoring industry. Both parties believe that as the main means of transportation for international trade, ships operating in complex and harsh environments for a long time will weaken the resistance strength of the hull structure, affecting the safety of the hull and related personnel's lives and property. Therefore, real-time online and full process monitoring of the operation status of the hull and ships is of great significance; However, traditional electromagnetic sensing monitoring technology is no longer able to meet practical monitoring needs due to its susceptibility to electromagnetic interference, corrosion, and harsh marine environments. Replacing traditional monitoring methods with fiber optic sensing monitoring technology will be the trend.
